چکیده

T HE effect of mercurial diuretics on the renal excretion of electrolytes has been thoroughly investigated in the dog and in the normal man.'-4 The electrolyte losses in the edematous patient, however, have been studied less extensively.4-7 There is general agreement that in both the normal individual. and in the edematous patient the diuresis is predominantly one of sodium and chloride. There is also agreement that potassium excretion is not increased in normal individuals while in the edematous patient an examination of the reported data reveals potassium loss of varying magnitude.4 5 The present study was designed to extend the information concerning the relative losses of sodium, potassium and chloride following administration of a mercurial diuretic in edematous patients and to assess the changes in body fluid compartments resulting from these losses.

Comparison of Mercurial Diuretics and Bed Rest in Normal and Toxemic Pregnancies

With the technical assistance of M. Ross Recent reports have indicated that oral organomercurial compounds are effective in promoting diuresis in edematous states. In the majority of these studies, however, salt restriction, bed rest, and other medications were used. Therefore, the diuretic effects of the oral mercurials alone have not been properly assessed. In the present report, the effects ...

Mechanisms Contributing to Unresponsiveness to Mercurial

The ultimate failure of edematous cardiac patients to respond to mercurial diuretics is well established. Although the older literature ascribed this to renal tubular accommodation to mercury, some patients have received mercurials for many years without manifesting such acquired tubular resistance. More recently, because of the potentiation of mercurial diuresis in previously unresponsive pati...

Effect of osmotic and mercurial diuresis on simultaneous water diuresis.

A VARIETY of mechanisms have been proposed to explain the dilute urine excreted in water diuresis. Cushny (I) and Smith (2) may be consulted for references to the older literature. Theoretical concepts which have been current in recent years will be considered in more detail in the discussion at the end of this paper. The experiments reported here were devised to test the degree to which water ...
